Julian was born near Brighton in Southern England. After having been given a Pentax K1000 camera by his father as a 16th birthday present he discovered the joys of photography in the course of an idyllic summer holiday spent taking pictures around the lakes of rural Sweden. While working at the Brighton Arts Festival after university he began photographing musicians & performers. In 1989 he moved to New York to pursue photography full time.

On a shoot one day in 1993 he met his future wife & photographic partner Ngoc Minh Ngo. Upon being given a commission to shoot interiors of a large retail store, the two joined forces to collaborate as Minh+Wass.
They went on to shoot lifestyle, food & travel work for Elle Décor, Travel+Leisure, Martha Stewart Living, Real Simple, Bergdorf Goodman & Kenneth Cole.

Since the arrival in 2001 of their daughter, Julian & Ngoc have gone on to work separately, with Julian specializing in interiors, lifestyle & travel photography. Commercial & Editorial Clients include Anthropologie, LL Bean Home, House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living, This Old House & Elle Decoration UK.
